The Project

Banyuwangi LPG Terminal is a multi-million dollar project in East Java, Indonesia. Operating in hazardous environments, the terminal required lighting and enclosure solutions to ensure the site is run safely and reliably.

Banyuwangi LPG Terminal is owned by Pertamina Ltd and Bosowa Ltd. Built to supply East Java and Bali, Banyuwangi can store up to 10,000 metric tons of LPG on site.

As a high risk zone, the site needed high quality explosion proof equipment. Reitama Engineering Ltd, distributors of B&R Enclosures’ products in Indonesia, were engaged to supply, erect, install and commission equipment to Banyuwangi LPG Terminal.

An LPG terminal is an area where flammable liquids, gases and vapours or combustible dusts are frequently present. As such, Persero Ltd, the main contractor for this project, required explosion proof enclosures and equipment. In addition to this, as Banyuwangi LPG Terminal is located in an equatorial region, any equipment must be able to endure extreme heat, high humidity, salty air and torrential rain.

Persero required a complete solution, from supply to installation and commission of equipment. Using B&R hazardous areas enclosures and lighting solutions,
Reitama Engineering worked closely with Persero to meet their requirements.

LIGHTING

B&R Enclosures supplied non-metallic fluorescent and aluminium explosion proof lighting for LPG controlling stations. These lights are flameproof, guaranteeing an explosion within the enclosure will not propagate outside the enclosure.

B&R also supplied floodlighting for the road adjacent to the four 2,500 ton LPG storage tanks. Suitable for use in zone 1 & 2 (gas and vapours) applications, these lights are designed to operate in areas in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation. Able to withstand heats up to 200 degrees C, B&R floodlights are also flameproof.

ENCLOSURES

B&R provided explosion and fireproof aluminium enclosures to accommodate Motor Operated Valve (MOV) panels. These panels operate in a high risk environment, monitoring and controlling the status of high-pressure valves across the site.

B&R’s aluminium Ex d enclosures were chosen to serve as MOV panels to offer the highest protection during operations. These enclosures are designed to house terminals, electrical equipment and cable terminations, and are suitable for applications where reliability and safety are the highest priority.

Junction boxes were required for multiple instruments around the LPG terminal. For this application, B&R supplied flat roof enclosures. Pertamina and Bosowa specified that these enclosures would be operating in an area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation. Manufactured from 316 stainless steel, these enclosures are suitable for use in zones 1 & 2 and 21 & 22 (dust).

B&R worked with Reitama Engineering to provide a cost effective solution to suit the needs of Banyuwangi LPG Terminal. The terminal was officially inaugurated in December 2016, and the plant is now fully operational.
